Tiger, it’s snowing!

Daishu Ma
Post Wave Children’s Books
Age 0-5 years

Tiger is excited to see snow for the very first time and eager to get out and play. Mei is more reluctant because it is so cold outside. However, Tiger persuades her and together they wonder at the beauty of the snow-covered landscape and have great fun making footprints, snow angels and rolling down the hill. There’s a big tiger hug for Mei when she starts sneezing and a warming bowl of soup when they get home.

With delightful illustrations, this is an appealing story about the magic of experiencing snow for the very first time.

Read aloud
Read the story aloud to your child taking time to enjoy the beautiful illustrations.

Join in
Join in with some of the words and sound effects eg Hop! Hop! Hop! Left, Right, Left, Right, Brrrrr! Woohoo! and Wheee!

Encourage your child to join in with the ideas, imagining they are tasting snowflakes on their tongues, shivering with cold or having a big bowl of steaming soup or a great big cuddle.

Talk about the story
Look together at the title page and wonder about what the tiger is thinking as he looks out of the window.
Talk about Mei and Tiger and how they feel about going out in the snow –is Mei as keen as Tiger?
Talk about times you have both been very cold, was it snowy or frosty? What did you do to get warm again for example have some warm soup, or snuggle in a blanket?
Pretend to be very cold, shivering together – and then have a lovely cuddle to warm up.
Look at the end papers and talk about what is happening before the story starts and after it finishes.

Things to make and do

Play in the snow
If you are lucky enough to have a snowy day..
Try catching snowflakes on your tongue
Make footprints, hop, jump or march in the snow.
Look out of a window or walk to the top of a hill and look at the snow-covered view together. Talk about what you see.

Paint a snowy picture
You need white paint for this activity, a couple of different sized round paint brushes and if possible coloured sugar paper either grey or blue.

Show your child how to make blobs of paint on the paper with the different brushes until the paper looks like a snowy scene. When your snowy picture is dry you could cut out some tree shapes

Make a snowy scene
Fill a plastic tray with shaving foam to make a snowy scene. Suggest your child places some small plastic figures in it, for example Duplo, Playmobil or similar. Make marks in your snowy scene or have fun burying the figures in it.
